Member Meeting - April 21, 2027

Presentation: Jaw Dropping: Everything You Didn’t Know About TMD (An Essential Pillar of Orofacial Pain Specialty)

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the hallmark signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders, including disc displacement, myalgia, and referred head/neck pain patterns

2. Differentiate TMJ-related pain from other orofacial pain conditions (odontogenic, sinus, neurovascular) commonly seen in general practice

3. Describe key components of a TMJ history and clinical exam, including joint palpation, range-of-motion measurements, and diagnostic injections

4. Recognize appropriate indications for advanced imaging (CBCT/MRI) in TMJ evaluation

5. Outline a conservative, evidence-based treatment sequence for TMJ disorders, from at-home care to orthotic therapy and adjunct injections (e.g., PRF)

6. Identify criteria for referral to an orofacial pain specialist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon, including red flags for progressive joint disease

7. Apply strategies for integrating TMJ screening into routine dental exams to improve early detection and interdisciplinary care coordination
