Presentation: Anesthesia Options and Requirements for Washington Dentists
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the different levels of anesthesia and sedation used in dental practices.
- Summarize Washington state regulatory requirements (WAC) for each level of dental anesthesia.
- Compare oral and IV sedation, deep and general anesthesia methods and understand patient experiences at different sedation depths.
- Identify administrative, staffing, and equipment requirements for providing moderate sedation, deep sedation, and general anesthesia in a dental office.
- Provide dentists with a comprehensive understanding of the appropriate utilization, provider qualifications, and availability of external mobile anesthesia services within the regulatory framework of dental anesthesia in Washington State.
About our Presenters: James Prince, CRNA, is Chief of Anesthesia, Elite Anesthesia, James Prince is a board-certified nurse anesthetist with over 13 years of experience, specializing in pediatric, geriatric, and medically complex patients. A Dallas native and scholar athlete in football, he earned his BSN with honors from Stephen F. Austin State University before completing his anesthesia training at the University of Miami, where he also graduated with honors. James has managed thousands of challenging cases across specialties including vascular, cardiac, trauma, and chronic illness. His extensive clinical background has allowed him to bring hospital-level safety and precision into the outpatient and dental space through mobile anesthesia. In 2023, James became Chief of Elite Anesthesia, leading Washington’s fastest-growing mobile anesthesia group. Known for his expertise with special needs patients and commitment to elevating care, he was named a Seattle Met Top Doctor in 2024.
Michael Mielniczek, CRNA, Assistant Chief, Elite Anesthesia Michael Mielniczek is a board-certified nurse anesthesiologist with deep expertise in mobile and office-based anesthesia care. He has safely delivered thousands of anesthetics across dental offices, hospitals, and surgery centers throughout Washington state. Prior to advancing mobile anesthesia services in dentistry, Michael served as Chief CRNA for multiple high-volume surgery centers, where he established safety protocols and served as the final clinical resource for complex cases—supporting the safe delivery of more than 19,000 anesthetics annually. He was also on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic, managing critically ill patients in the ICU through his work with Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians, drawing on both his anesthesia and critical care background. Michael is recognized for his ability to safely manage medically complex patients in the dental setting, including individuals with chronic illnesses and special needs. He currently serves as Assistant Chief at Elite Anesthesia, a mobile anesthesia group supporting over 150 dental offices across Washington state.
